Anything battery powered has a niggling drawback. Once that battery goes, so does your camera. Make sure that you never miss out on a key photo opportunity again with our step by step guide to squeeze as much life as possible out of your digital camera battery.

Digital cameras are particularly draining on batteries. Some digital camera features are far more draining than others, and getting to know which features instantly sap the life out of your power supply will help you to use your camera in a more energy efficient way.

LCD screen tips

Those useful LCD screens are actually the worst offender when it comes to killing batteries dead. If you really want to save battery life then switch off the LCD and use the regular viewfinder instead.

The majority of new digital cameras now feature auto shut off for your LCD screen. This automatically shuts off your LCD screen after a period of inactivity to cut energy consumption. If this is not already set up on your camera, activate this function and see just how much battery power you save.

If you do prefer to use the LCD screen rather than the viewfinder, you can reduce energy usage by adjusting your LCD screen brightness to the lowest setting.

That other big energy sapper

Besides the LCD, the moving motors of your camera use up a lot of energy too. Your camera motors are responsible for moving the parts inside and outside the camera, such as your camera lens every time you focus. A simple way to instantly cut down on motor use is by switching your camera from continual to single focus. When taking action shots rather than continually holding down the shutter button to continually adjust focus, focus only when you intend to shoot

More camera tips

Make the most of the energy saving functions that your camera comes with, such as energy saving mode. Set your cameras energy saving mode to the lowest time setting so that as soon as your camera is not in use it will automatically shut down.

Avoid deleting or manipulating images on your camera unless you really need to. Wait to do this on your computer back home instead.

This guide to digital camera batteries was written by James Nesbitt, a green blogger and photo pro. He recommends RS Components for their large selection of the latest rechargeable lithium batteries.
