Things To Look Out For When Finding A Ski Insurance Policy

If you want to go and take a skiing holiday in the mountains this year then you’re going to have to find an insurance policy that provides extra coverage than what you would get from a standard travel insurance policy. Typically, travel agents and tour operators will provide you with a deal of some sort but it’s always wise to look elsewhere too and see what other offers are available on the market. You may find other deals out there which give you better coverage at a more affordable cost. But if you do look elsewhere, be careful to find out exactly what the alternatives involve.

Some policies will offer you 24 hour assistance, giving you support round the clock should you have any emergency. In the event of an emergency this is enormously helpful, as it will give you one point of contact who will promptly pay any medical bills or doctors fees and who will arrange for repatriation if necessary.

You should, however, note that insurers sometimes require you to notify the assistance company within 24 hours in the event of injury of hospitalisation. You could lose the right to claim if you fail to follow their terms.

Under-18s may be covered automatically for free if their parents have a skiing insurance policy. However if you have children registered under your policy they may not be covered if they go skiing as part of a school trip. So you should always study the conditions with care.

Ski insurance will usually cover you if your equipment is lost from outside bars and restaurants, but it may not be covered if you don’t properly lock it away overnight. Most hotels in ski resorts have secure rooms where you can safely keep your equipment when you aren’t using it, so make sure you take advantage of this and do all you can to deter thieves. This will reduce the risk of losing your expensive equipment. If something does get stolen however, you will at least be able to say that you followed the terms of the policy, making it easier to claim.

You should also study your policy to see how you’ll be reimbursed if you do make a claim. Generally, stolen equipment is not replaced with new, but rather you’ll be recompensed with a figure calculated from the age and current value on the market of what is stolen.

Liability cover is typically included in ski insurance, but the level available can differ. You should find out what level of liability you are covered for, and if it is insufficient then you should look into extending it.

All of this points to the importance of studying your policy carefully so that you know what the terms and conditions are. This of course is true whatever type of insurance you are looking for.
