I’m taking my little 2 and 1/2 year old daughter for a stroll on the banks of the River Thames in Chertsey, Surrey. It’s a great summer mid-day and the views, I would imagine, would have changed little for years and years.Indeed, cows still in habit the flood plains on the other side of the river.

And today there is a small grouping of teenagers enjoying a BBQ near us. One of the girls leaps up and runs into the shallow waters below. She helps her two friends who have paddled up the steam. The heavily taped up kayak is pulled up to shore and then the two “sailors” re-join their friends.

Such a fun way of spending an afternoon, I was thinking. Indeed canoeing in a kayak brought back memory of my days while in the Scouts. I had forgotten how enjoyable this activity can be. Strangely having been raised on the river I have never owned a boat. That was the same feeling that my newly retired father must have too as a few weeks later, I was sitting in his new Sea Eagle inflatable kayak.

It seemed very nice as we surveyed the view of trees, with my daughter hanging out over the sides. She was wearing a life jacket and rather fortunately we hadn’t gone aware as we were sitting slap bang in the middle of the back garden. His kayak had yet to make its maiden voyage but just for a moment I was able to imagine what it would be like to paddle under our own steam.

A few strokes here and there, lying back in the inflatable canoe and watching the wildlife. Just perfect. My hand is grabbed and I’m hauled out from the boat by my daughter.
