Most of us are concerned about the impact of our actions on the world's environment. We want to be able to adopt a greener outlook, yet still maintain the same standard of living we currently enjoy.

If we make small, simple changes in our shopping habits and around our homes, we can all do our bit to help. Here are some practical tips for a greener lifestyle.

By just changing our eating habits we can have a positive effect on the environment. Cut down on food miles and support your local economy by buying your food from local suppliers. Buy local organic produce where possible, because organic food uses less energy during the growing process than non-organic alternatives.

Adopt a less throw-away attitude to clothing. Clothes can be bought for next to nothing these days, but the quality often suffers. Instead of buying lots of cheap, poor quality items, try a few better quality pieces, and you will find they look great and last longer. Try vintage or recycled clothing for unique clothes that don't cost the earth.

Make use of any outdoor spaces you have available. By drying your washing outside instead of using your tumble dryer you can save energy and money. Use a rain barrel in your garden to collect water for your plants instead of using your hosepipe.

Make an effort to get your home properly insulated, and make sure that unused appliances are turned off when not in use, and don't leave anything on standby. Switching to energy saving light bulbs is also an excellent way to conserve energy around the home.

It is almost impossible to avoid using any fossil fuels, or to get products that won't have needed fossil fuels at some stage of their production, packaging and transportation. However, carbon emissions from fossil fuels are threatening our climate. Look for carbon neutral products, for example British Gas offers a dual fuel, zero carbon package which offsets the carbon emissions from your gas and electricity by investing in green energy projects.

These are just a few of the easy ways that you can lead a greener lifestyle without lowering your standard of living. If you are interested in finding out more, there are lots of useful guides available online.

If you are looking to transform your electricity supply into a green one then look no further than British Gas. One of the greener gas suppliers in the United Kingdom.
