Hermann Hospital was the initial foundation on site that shortly became the Texas Medical Center. in spite of its unsettled history, the hospital was the altruistic idea of one of Houston’s supplementary unusual inhabitants, George Henry Hermann, an unusual mixture of miser, do-gooder and industrialist. They charged the trustees of larceny and failure to form the hospital. A new board was chose and the hospital finally began in 1925. A high fence had to be set up to keep wolves off the hospital grounds. The trustees approached to court to get consent to receive paying patients to facilitate sponsoring the charity ward. The hospital began with more paying patients than charity patients. More then 80 years later than his demise, George Hermann has his charity hospital, but its history and setup may perhaps not have been unerringly what he had planned.
