Involve The Teenagers When Your Family Moves

When you inform the teenagers in your family of your impending move, it could prove to be a harrowing experience. Teenagers are usually accustomed to the friends and teachers who surround them every day. When you break the news to them, they get angry and sometimes withdraw. They could make the moving process difficult. It definitely helps to know of ways to reduce the stress and make it easier on you and your family.

At the time when you would be looking for the perfect home, do not forget to ask for inputs from the teenagers. Let them help you choose your family’s new home; the bedroom they would like to make their own etc. They would probably not have full control over the decisions but taking their opinions seriously is what matters. Now that you have decided on your new home, let your teens spruce up their rooms; they would have something to look forward to thereby reducing their potential resistance over the move. Let creativity reign while you ask them to label the boxes in which their stuff is contained so as to make it easier on the movers and packers. When it comes to changing over and selecting the school your teens would be attending, involve them during the process of school transfer, registration in the new school etc. A tour prior to registration and a meeting with teachers do help in reducing their stress of starting to settle down in a new place and new environs.

It is important for the teens to be able to say byes to friends and teachers before leaving. Have them buy a scrapbook and journals so that their friends and teachers can sign and provide contact information. Your teens would like a good bye party for their friends while you ask them to take the responsibility of planning and setting it up. Once everything about the party has been reasonably finalized, make sure that you back their plans and make it a reality. One day before the actual moving day, give your teens a list of task to make them feel involved. Choose tasks that can be handled by themselves or with help from other family members. Let them know that it takes every family member’s help to make a move successful.

Moving never is easy especially for teens. On the other hand, no one wants their kids to suffer. Taking these simple steps can greatly reduce the stress for every one in the family.
