Gas and Electricity Supply When You Move House

See More articles From davesabri@googlemail.com

Moving house can be incredibly stressful, so make your life a little easier and remember to sort out your gas and electricity providers. You need to ensure you are not billed for energy you have not used at either property, so to help you out here is a quick guide to tell you what to do.

Firstly, contact your current supplier in advance to let them know you will be moving. The last thing you do when you leave your old house is to check the gas and electricity meters. You should give those readings to your old suppliers so that they can send you your last bill.

Likewise, when you get into your new property make sure the first thing you do is to take meter readings. Do not rely on the previous occupant to have done this or you could end up paying for gas and electricity they have used.

If you don't know who the suppliers are for your new home, the Meter Point Administration Service will be able to tell you who supplies the electricity, and xoserve will know who your gas supplier is. Directory Enquiries will be able to give you the phone numbers for your local offices.

If you get a bill in the old occupier's name, you should contact the company that sent the bill as soon as possible. If your first bill is in your name but appears to be for the wrong amount, this could be because the supplier has used an estimated reading to calculate your bill. A phone call to give new meter readings should get this sorted out.

It is a good idea to look at all the deals available to you in your new home. It is possible there may be different suppliers available to you than in your old house, and you might get cheaper prices.

For ease, it is hard to beat dual fuel deals where you get your gas and electricity from the same supplier. British Gas for example have dual fuel deals which are a lot cheaper than many other separate gas and electricity tariffs.

To find out which suppliers are available at your address, the easiest thing to do is look online. There are several good price comparison websites which will help you get the best deal. You just need your postcode and a few details from your recent bills, and you will be given the different options.

British Gas are the largest electricity supplier in the United Kingdom, providing their services to more areas than anyone else. As well as this they officially have the cheapest energy in the UK on average, take a look at their electricity prices online now.
