There are many reasons for the increasing number of students that are choosing to take gap years in China at the moment. Firstly, as English speakers it is usually relatively easy to find employment either teaching for an organisation or offering private lessons. Chinese students are aware that to successful in business they will require competent English and are almost always eager to improve their skills in the language.

What is more, China offers a broadening cultural experience. From religion through to politics, China will continually challenge every western preconception you may have, greatly enhancing your understanding of a culture dramatically different from your own. Furthermore, China, mostly, welcomes its visitors with extreme warmth and kindness.

There are many other perks to choosing China as your gap year destination. If, for example, you stay long enough to master even a little of the mandarin language this will be an attractive addition to any curriculum vitae as far as future employment opportunities are concerned. The experience of living within a culture so vastly different from your own also demonstrates independence and effective adaptability that will no doubt also impress on any job applications you may make.

An experience such as this will also improve your confidence in dealing with new and unfamiliar situations throughout your life, preparing you for all kinds of challenges you may face in the future.

All kinds of other opportunities are also available. If wildlife conservation is your passion then you might like to consider volunteering at one of the panda sanctuaries, mostly situated within the Yunnan province. If you’d simply like to see some exotic wildlife then think about going on a tropical forest expedition or a rainforest trek. China’s ecosystems are so diverse that there’s bound to be something to interest every budding botanist or zoologist.

An experience such as this will also improve your confidence in dealing with new and unfamiliar situations throughout your life, preparing you for all kinds of challenges you may face in the future.

There is a great deal of planning involved in a long trip to China, so if you think this is something you might like to do be sure to get yourself organised well in advance. There will be certain vaccinations that you require as well as a medical certificate proving your general health before you may apply for a Chinese visa.

If you’re staying and working for over 6 months you will also require a specific type of insurance. Many companies on the internet and beyond offer insurance that is specifically designed for backpackers and student travellers; so be sure to check that out before you leave in order to be certain that your trip will be a safe one.

For cheap travel insurance including annual travel insurance visit AA Travel Insurance and ensure that emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
