Over 40% of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions, the main greenhouse gas which causes climate change, come from the energy we use everyday, at home.

The process of generating electricity involves the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas; this produces carbon dioxide. Although using cars also adds to the UK’s CO2 emissions, over 40% comes from the energy we use at home.

6 tonnes of carbon dioxide are produced by the average house each year.

If no greenhouse gases had ever been produced, the Earth’s average temperature would be around -18 degrees centigrade, compared with the current average of around +15 degrees centigrade. The reason why our planet is getting hotter is that greenhouse gases have created a blanket around us, preventing heat from escaping into the atmosphere.

The weather, plants, animals and our health have been and will be affected by this increase in temperature.

The warmer winters, with heavier rain, and hotter, drier summers of the last 40 years can be attributed to global warming.

In 2003, heat waves killed thousands of people across Europe. By the end of the century, similar heat waves and temperatures of over 40 degrees centigrade could be commonplace in the UK.

Because of the change in temperature, many of the species of animals and plants that we traditionally associate with Britain may disappear. England’s green and pleasant lands may become brown and burnt.

With a warmer climate in the UK, the numbers of people suffering from cataracts, skin cancer and even some tropical diseases may increase. In the US, mosquitoes carrying such diseases as Dengue Fever and West Nile virus have started to be recorded as a result of rising temperatures.

Feeling hot? Turn your radiators off.

British Gas is the UK's greenest gas and electricity supplier, central heating provider, and energy efficiency advisor. Reduce your electricbills and carbon footprint by switching to British Gas online today.
